The 2022 RISER (Research Immersion in Biomedical Science and Engineering at Rowan) Summer Program for High School Students invites nominations from New Jersey high school teachers for 2022 Summer Scholars.

This volunteer, non-residential program provides hands-on research opportunities for qualified high school students in cutting-edge research labs in Biomedical Sciences and Biomedical Engineering. Scholars will spend six weeks (June 20-July 29, 2022) in the lab working with Rowan faculty, post-graduate fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate student mentors on their own mini-research project.

The program is split into two tracks: Biomedical Science (labs in Camden & Stratford, NJ) and Biomedical Engineering (labs in Camden & Glassboro, NJ). New Jersey high school teachers wishing to nominate a student for this program can do so by selecting the appropriate track below and completing the brief form that follows.

Students interested in the Biomedical Science track must have taken (or be currently taking) AP Biology and 1 year of Chemistry (preferably AP Chemistry). Students interested in the Biomedical Engineering track must have taken (or be currently taking) Physics (preferably AP Physics), 1 year of Chemistry (preferably AP Chemistry), and Pre-Calculus (preferably AP Calculus).

Nominations will only be accepted from South Jersey high school teachers using their school-issued email address and only 2 students can be nominated per high school. Students may not self-nominate. South Jersey counties include: Burlington, Ocean, Camden, Gloucester, Atlantic, Salem, Cumberland, and Cape May.

Nominators and nominees will receive the full application packet via email shortly after being nominated. The full application packet is due May 6, 2022.  Invitations to participate in the program will be sent on a rolling basis, no later than the end of April.

All Scholars are expected to conduct volunteer research for at least 20 hours per week for 6 weeks, and attend the culminating symposium on Friday, July 29th. Planned absences during the program should be discussed with the faculty mentor upon placement, but should be avoided if possible.

For questions, please contact the applicable track coordinator. The Biomedical Science track is coordinated by Dr. Katrina Cooper (cooperka@rowan.edu) and the Biomedical Engineering track is coordinated by Dr. Sebastian Vega (vegas@rowan.edu).
